Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a historic leader of Mexico's left, died on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at the age of 92, according to El País and Telemundo.

Cárdenas was born on May 1, 1934, in Mexico City. He trained as a civil engineer at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the country's large public university, El País reported.

His public career centred on electoral politics. He was a three-time candidate for the presidency of Mexico, El Financiero reported. He was also Mexico City's first elected mayor, serving from 1997 to 1999, according to the Encyclopaedia Britannica biography. The mayor leads the city's government.

Reporting from the Spanish-language press described him as a long-standing figure of the Mexican left, a movement that had sought the presidency through him several times. Infobae carried the same description in its coverage of his death.

The Mexican newspaper La Jornada also reported his death on October 28. El Financiero reported that the causes of his death were unknown.
