Metroid Prime trilogy engineer calls Sol Valley "a waste" of development time

Jack Mathews, a lead technical engineer on Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3, has said that Sol Valley, a desert area in Metroid Prime 4, was a poor use of the team's time. Video Games Chronicle reported his comments on 29 October 2026, drawn from an interview with Kiwi Talkz.
Sol Valley is a desert that Samus, the series' main character, explores on her Vi-O-La bike. It also works as a hub, a central area that links other parts of the game. Mathews said the area was likely a distraction that pulled development resources away from the rest of Metroid Prime 4.
He said the terrain system built for Sol Valley had never existed in Metroid before, so the team had to create it from scratch. He also said the area uses only two or three AI systems, the programmed behaviours that control characters and enemies, and that none of them appear anywhere else in the game. He called the work "just a waste" and "a split of resources that makes no sense."
To make his point, Mathews compared the area to adding a sea like the one in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to a dungeon-based Zelda game. Dungeons are the tightly designed, puzzle-filled levels the series is known for, while the Wind Waker sea is a large open ocean. He said the work on Sol Valley did not carry over into any other part of the game.
The bike sections were also a new challenge for the team, Mathews said. Creating the bike gameplay was risky because the developers had no earlier experience to judge how long it would take or whether it would be fun. The main first-person gameplay, where the player sees through Samus's eyes, had a track record the team could draw on.
Metroid Prime 4 is the latest entry in a first-person action-adventure series that began with the original Metroid Prime, and its open areas and vehicle sections are a design choice the team made. Fans who want to hear the other side will have to wait for further comment from the people who built the game.
