Joey King and LaKeith Stanfield are set to star in Safe Space, a sci-fi comedy about toxic relationships, Variety reported on 29 October 2026.

The film follows Sherrie, a scientist played by King. She is recovering from a toxic relationship with a co-worker when she starts seeing an alien, played by Stanfield. The story is built around that unlikely pairing, with the comedy coming from the awkward start of a new romance.

Gillian Wallace Horvat is directing. Her debut feature, I Blame Society, premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 2020. The film is produced by Karen Lunder through her production label Outdoor Cat, a company name a producer uses for her own projects.

Safe Space is still in the financing stage, which means the money to make it is still being put together. It is planned to shoot in the second quarter of 2027, which runs from April to June, in the United States.

The sales side is already moving. French sales company Lucky Number is launching sales on the film at the American Film Market, a trade event in Los Angeles where distributors and sellers do business on films that are often not yet finished. Lucky Number is working alongside CAA Media Finance and WME Independent, the film-financing and independent arms of two talent agencies. The company also plans to show buyers an exclusive sizzle reel, a short promotional preview, at the market.

Why does this matter? Deals made at markets like this help decide which projects get funded and which distributors get first look at them. For a film still searching for its money, a market presence is one of the early steps toward a cinema or streaming release. No release date has been announced for Safe Space.
