BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says the leveraged buyout of Electronic Arts was "the final nail in the coffin" for the studio. A leveraged buyout is a purchase funded largely by borrowed money. Eurogamer reported his remarks, which came after Electronic Arts announced that BioWare was shutting down.

The closure was announced on social media, according to AP. The studio is best known for the Mass Effect series, and an upcoming Mass Effect game has been canceled. That game would have been the fifth Mass Effect title since 2007. BioWare had operated for more than three decades before the shutdown.

Zeschuk co-founded BioWare in 1995 with fellow medical students Ray Muzyka and Augustine Yip. Yip left the company in 1998. Zeschuk and Muzyka retired in 2012. Electronic Arts bought BioWare in 2008. Muzyka has so far declined to be interviewed about the closure.

In an interview with 80 Level, Zeschuk said BioWare was killed by executives who have never made a game, as 80 Level reported. He also said he was not surprised the studio was shut down. He described the closure as "kind of sad."

The buyout he refers to was announced on 29 September 2025. Electronic Arts agreed to be acquired by PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners in a deal valued at US$55 billion. PIF is Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The consortium will acquire 100 per cent of Electronic Arts, according to the company's announcement.

For fans, the most concrete loss is the game that will not be made. Mass Effect has a long history of fans waiting between instalments, and that wait now has no end date. Zeschuk's remarks are his own view of how the studio ended.

Since 2017, Zeschuk has been building Blind Enthusiasm, a beer-brewing company. He has not returned to making games, and his interviews have focused on the studio he helped found.
