Spiny, the spiked Mario character, may have been planned as a playable driver in Mario Kart World. A dataminer's find, reported by Eurogamer on 29 October 2026, points to that possibility.

Datamining means searching a game's files for content that players have not yet seen. Those files can hold names, labels and references that never reach the finished release. Some are leftovers from early plans. Others are placeholders that were later changed.

The Spiny reference was first spotted by Bluesky user Benial. In Mario Kart World's code, Spiny is listed under the internal name 'Togezo', next to other characters. An internal name is the working label a development team uses during production. Players do not see it in the final game.

Spiny is a long-running figure in the Mario series. Racing fans will know the Spiny Shell, an item that is famous for targeting the driver in first place. Seeing Spiny in the code does not, on its own, mean the character will appear in a race.

What the find does not include is any artwork for a driving version. As of Eurogamer's report, no model or animation for Spiny as a driver had been found. A model is the three-dimensional character design. An animation is the set of movements that makes a character run, steer and react on track. Without either, there is nothing to see on screen.

The listing confirms that Spiny was in the code. It does not say whether Spiny was ever meant for the final game, or whether the character was dropped at some point in development. Those decisions sit with the team that made the game.

For players, the news is a reminder of how much work sits behind a racing roster. Each character needs a model, a set of animations, sound and a place in the game's data. Any of those pieces can change long before launch.
