Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals

Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 on Thursday night to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, the League Cup, England's knockout competition. The Guardian reported the win from Hill Dickinson Stadium, where the match kicked off at 7.45pm.
Knockout cups are simple to follow. Lose and you are out. Win and you move on to the next round. Everton will now host or travel to face Fleetwood Town in the quarter-final.
Everton were ahead by 2-0 at half-time. Their goals came from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry, who scored in the 69th minute to make it 3-0. Newcastle pulled one back, but the scoreline stayed at 3-1 to Everton until the final whistle.
Garner's goal was his first of the season, so the night meant something personal as well as collective. Hackney and Tyler Dibling were both named in the starting line-up, giving Everton's midfield a fresh look for a cup tie.
The biggest name missing was Jack Grealish, the 31-year-old winger. Everton announced before kick-off that he would not play, for disciplinary reasons. Manager David Moyes had left him out after Grealish missed training on Monday without permission. Moyes did not need him, and his team delivered the result without him.
The referee was Farai Hallam, with James Mainwaring and Constantine Hatzidakis as his assistants.
Cup nights like this often matter more than their size suggests. A club that wins them gets a route to Wembley, the traditional home of the English domestic cup finals, and a reason to keep the crowd singing a few more weeks. For Everton, the next job is Fleetwood Town, and a team that has just scored three goals will be hoping that form carries straight into the next game.
