Sarah J. Maas's new fantasy novel, A Court of Splintered Harmony, sold 1.7 million copies on its release day, Tuesday, Oct. 27, according to Variety. That broke a sales record for Maas, and the book is tracking to be the largest book release of the year, the trade outlet reported.

The book is the sixth in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, often called ACOTAR by fans. Its publisher, Bloomsbury, counted preorders (copies bought before release day) and first-day sales. The count covers English-language print and ebook editions sold worldwide at major retailers and independent bookstores in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia. It does not include audiobooks or translated editions.

Release-day sales were up 600% on those of A Court of Silver Flames, the fifth book in the series, which came out in 2021. Around 2,000 midnight release parties were held around the world for the new book, Variety reported.

Maas has sold more than 100 million books worldwide across the ACOTAR series, Throne of Glass and Crescent City. Before release, Splintered Harmony ranked No. 2 on Amazon's charts, according to Forbes.

The story picks up with sisters Feyre, Nesta and Elain Archeron in Prythian, the faerie realm where the series is set. Readers who want more will not have long to wait. The seventh book, A Court of Forgotten Melody, is due on Jan. 12.

Both books belong to a larger project called The Valkyrie Cycle. Variety reported that it is a four-part story, and a third novel, still untitled, will close it out.

Television is a separate chapter. An ACOTAR series was put into development at Disney's 20th Television and Hulu in 2021, with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner, working with Maas. That project was scrapped in February 2025 because of creative differences. The rights have since reverted to Maas, Variety reported.

For readers, the practical news is simple. The book is out now, the next instalment is set for January, and the wider series is still being written.
