Spain's Transport Minister Refuses to Resign After Second Major Train Accident

Spain's transport minister, Oscar Puente, has refused to resign after a second major train accident, according to Reuters. The same report says a Spanish train was travelling at 160 kph when it smashed into a second train.
In October 2026, a train crash in Toledo province killed 68 people, Reuters reported. The crash came nine months after another deadly accident on the same line.
Puente has said that incorrect instructions from traffic control operators, the staff who direct train movements, led to the train crash, as The New York Times reported.
ABC7 New York reported that a Renfe train, operated by Spain's national rail company, was authorized to proceed without any speed restrictions, the limits that set how fast a train may run, because of an erroneous order from a train controller.
