Bluesky Launches a Moderation Inbox in Beta

Bluesky is rolling out a moderation inbox in beta through its app. The inbox is a dedicated surface that collects the reports users have filed about other users and posts, the actions taken against their own accounts, and their overall standing on the platform. The feature was announced on October 30, 2026, in a Bluesky blog post titled Introducing the moderation inbox, written by Aaron Rodericks.

Access is opt-in. Users switch on beta features in the app's Settings menu, then find the inbox under the Moderation tools menu. Bluesky says the inbox will start empty even for users who have already received a strike, so past enforcement does not appear on first open. The inbox is where users can appeal most moderation decisions directly through the app. Suspensions are the exception. They must still be handled at the login screen, which means a suspended account cannot use the in-app appeal path.

The same update adds an optional home-screen widget that displays trending topics. Bluesky has not made the widget mandatory, and it sits alongside the inbox rather than replacing any existing surface.

The inbox builds on enforcement work Bluesky has been describing for more than a year. In September 2025, the company said it would do more to enforce its moderation policies. In November 2025, it said it was improving in-app reporting and introducing new moderation systems and processes, and the changes included new reporting categories. By May 2026, Bluesky was notifying users of their infractions and the strikes they had accumulated. Enforcement escalates from temporary suspensions as strikes build up. The inbox gives users a single place to see that record, and to contest it where the app allows.

The moderation work arrived during a busy month of product and policy posts. On October 19, 2026, Bluesky published Protecting the 2026 US Midterm Elections on Bluesky. On October 22, Alex Benzer posted Introducing Profile Links. The moderation inbox followed eight days later.

The company's leadership also changed in 2026. Jay Graber stepped back as CEO on March 9 to become Chief Innovation Officer, and Toni Schneider took over as interim CEO the same day. On July 10, Bluesky named Schneider permanent CEO. His tenure therefore began as an interim role, and the moderation tooling now arriving reflects the company's priorities under his leadership.

Scale is the backdrop for all of this. Bluesky raised $100 million in Series B funding in April 2025, led by Bain Capital Crypto. It reported that its user base grew from 13 million to more than 43 million global users between its Series A and Series B updates. Moderation load grows with that user base. The volume of reports, appeals and strikes a platform this size produces is the operational problem the inbox is meant to address.

In my view, the inbox is worth watching less for its interface than for what it asks of the enforcement system behind it. A visible queue of reports and strikes only improves trust if appeal outcomes are consistent and the rules behind a strike are clear to the person who received it. The split between in-app appeals and login-screen handling for suspensions will likely be the detail users test first, because it determines whether the most severe penalty comes with the same recourse as the milder ones.

The broader context here is a platform trying to make enforcement something users can see and respond to, rather than something that simply happens to them. For developers and trust-and-safety practitioners, the open question is whether the beta's data model, appeal flow and strike history hold up as report volume rises. For ordinary users, the practical change is narrower: a place to check where their account stands and a way to push back on most decisions without leaving the app. Bluesky says the inbox is in beta, so its shape may still change before it reaches all users.
