Saturday Night Live Pays Tribute to Patrick Stewart

Saturday Night Live honoured Patrick Stewart on its weekend episode, using an old clip from one of his own appearances as the show's host. The tribute was shown before the goodnights, the closing moment when the cast says farewell to the audience.
Stewart died at age 86 on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles. His wife, Sunny Ozell, was with him, according to Deadline. Many viewers knew him as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and later as Professor X in the X-Men films.
The archive clip showed Stewart introducing musical guest Salt-N-Pepa during a 1994 episode. A musical guest is the singer or band who performs during the episode. The tribute also included one of Stewart's promotional photos from his time on the show. Stewart hosted SNL, which means he fronted the whole episode, including the opening monologue and sketches with the cast.
The tribute came during an episode with a live performer of its own. Gracie Abrams was the musical guest, her second time on the show after her debut in 2024. Her appearance was booked before the news of Stewart's death, and the programme did not change its schedule around the tribute, which ran as a short segment near the end of the hour.
For longtime viewers, the segment offered a quick look back at a host whose work spanned science fiction, blockbuster films and the stage. For newer viewers, it may have been a first look at how a comedy show marks the death of someone who once stood in its spotlight. Either way, the moment was brief. It asked for a few seconds of attention before the cast said goodnight.
Stewart's death was a loss for his family, his friends and the many people whose work he shaped. The SNL segment was one small public way of remembering him.
