Indian film director Sanjay Gupta died on Friday, October 30, after a fall at his home in Mumbai, Deadline reported. Deadline gave his age as 57, while the Press Trust of India put it at 59.

Police said Gupta slipped in the kitchen of his residence on Friday night. He suffered a serious head injury and later died. Mumbai police registered a report of accidental death and said they do not suspect foul play. The Indian Express reported that his family was asleep when he was found dead at the home in Versova, a neighbourhood in northwest Mumbai, late on October 30.

Milap Zaveri, a director and a friend of Gupta, confirmed the death to the Press Trust of India. Filmmaker Hansal Mehta, and actors Neil Nitin Mukesh and Dia Mirza, also posted tributes to him. The Press Trust of India later reported that Gupta was cremated at the Versova crematorium.

Gupta made crime thrillers that built a large following in Hindi cinema. He directed Kaante (2002), Shootout at Wadala (2013) and Kaabil (2017). He also directed Zinda, according to NDTV. Through his production company, White Feather Films, he produced Shootout at Lokhandwala and Acid Factory, Deadline reported.

He is survived by his wife, Anuradha Lekhi Gupta, and their son, Shivaansh, and daughter, Dalai.

Friends and colleagues have spoken of him in the days since the news broke. His death came suddenly, and his family and the film community are now grieving.
