Borussia Dortmund came back from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Bayern Munich, and they did it with a goal in the last minute of normal time. Fabio Silva scored the equaliser in the 89th minute of the Klassiker, the name German football fans give to this fixture between Germany's two biggest clubs.

The match was played at the Allianz Arena in Munich on 31 October, as part of Matchday 8 of the Bundesliga season. A matchday is simply a round of fixtures, and every club plays one game per round.

Bayern had the bulk of the chances. Bayern Munich's own match report says they had 23 shots on goal, 18 of them from inside the penalty area. Harry Kane, the England striker who has been the main threat in Bayern's attack, had a penalty chance that went badly. Reuters reported that his spot kick struck the post, and it was the moment that sent the away end wild.

A penalty is a free shot from 11 metres, with only the goalkeeper to beat, and it is usually a near-certain goal. Kane's effort came back off the frame, and Dortmund stayed in the game. Their resistance was rewarded with the late leveller.

Dortmund had already needed to fight back. They trailed twice and still found a way to level, which is the kind of response that tends to be remembered long after the result. Lennart Karl also had a shot in stoppage time, the extra minutes the referee adds at the end of each half to make up for time lost to injuries and substitutions, but it did not change the outcome. The Guardian covered the closing stages in detail.

For Bayern, the result will feel like two points dropped in a match they largely controlled. For Dortmund, it is a point earned in one of the hardest away trips in the German league, against the side that has won the title more often than any other in recent decades. Neither club walks away with the full three points, which is what a win would have given.

Football fans know the feeling of a late goal in a derby. Those moments tend to stay with supporters for years, not because of the table, but because of the noise in the stands in the final minutes. This was one of those nights in Munich.
