New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Saturday that U.S. President Donald Trump had agreed to grant a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old boy who was shot dead in the Bronx. Mamdani said Trump “has agreed to grant her visa immediately”, according to the mayor's account of a conversation the two had about the case.

A visa is the official permission a government gives a foreign national to enter its territory. Javits Frimpong was a Ghanaian citizen who had moved to the United States a year before his death. His mother is seeking to travel to New York to say goodbye to her son.

Security camera footage showed Javits being chased by three other teenagers on Thursday morning as he made his way to school, according to CNN's reporting. He was shot in the abdomen and died in hospital the same day. His father, Thomas Frimpong, has said that Javits had told him he was being bullied at school.

Police are investigating the shooting. As of Sunday, November 1, no arrests had been made.

Ghana's Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, said Ghanaian officials are coordinating with local authorities in New York and helping the boy's mother with her visa application.

Thousands of people attended vigils for Javits across the city. In his announcement about the visa, Mamdani said that “All of New York City is mourning this tragedy” and wrote that “The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure.”
