Manchester City beat London City Lionesses 2-1 at Hayes Lane on 1 November, with Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp scoring in the second half. The Lionesses had plenty of the ball in the final third, but their finishing let them down.

The match had a second story before kick-off. Alexia Putellas, the Spanish star, held up her third Ballon d'Or, the award for the world's best player, in front of the crowd. She joined the Lionesses in the summer transfer window, the period when clubs can sign new players.

The numbers show a team that kept pushing. London City had 24 shots, with six on target, which means six efforts forced a save or were goal-bound. City's defending champions held on for the win. Manchester City listed the fixture as the first meeting of the season between the two sides in the Women's Super League, England's top women's league.

Eder Maestre is the Lionesses' manager, and Andree Jeglertz runs City's side. Both teams have had to plan around the demands of a long league season, but the two clubs sit at very different points in their journeys. BBC Sport reported that London City were playing second-tier football just 18 months ago.

That rapid rise has come with serious backing. The club is owned by American billionaire Michele Kang, who also owns the French club Lyon. The Lionesses have built their own training facility in Kent and agreed a shirt deal with Nike, believed to be worth more than £3 million a year.

Kang's role also raises a question for the sport. UEFA's rules say one owner cannot have two clubs competing in the same competition. London City and Lyon play in different competitions, so the rule is not in question here, but it is one of the reasons owners with multiple clubs attract close attention.

For the Lionesses, the defeat is a reminder of how fine the margins are. Their players created chances, and their fans will want to see those chances turned into goals in the next few weeks. For City, the result keeps them among the leaders, and they have a squad that can strike from more than one place.

Women's football has grown quickly in England, and matches like this one show why. A signing like Putellas brings attention to a club, and a result like this one gives both sides something to build on.
