BBC asks Americans whether their vote still matters before midterms

The BBC has published a video in which Americans across the country say how they feel about casting a ballot, and whether they think their vote matters. The film was published on Sunday 1 November, ahead of the United States midterm elections on Tuesday 3 November.
The video is part of the broadcaster's Voter Voices series. The BBC summarised it with the words "My vote still matters", and described it as Americans weighing in on the power of their ballot. It was filmed by Meiying Wu, Katy Bailes, Sheila Flynn and Andrew Herbert, and produced and edited by Meiying Wu. The BBC has also placed it within its coverage of the 2026 US midterms.
Midterm elections take place midway through a president's time in office. Reuters reported that the 2026 contests include governor races in 39 states. Going into the vote, Republicans held a 218-214 advantage in the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of Congress, and a 53-47 majority in the Senate, the upper chamber.
Voting has already started in many places. More than 51 million early votes had been cast as of 30 October, according to Reuters. The Associated Press said it would deploy more than 4,000 reporters to county election offices and local polling locations, to follow the count and the race calls on election night, according to Reuters.
