John Oliver Calls Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans "Two Complete Lunatics"
John Oliver has taken aim at Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans on his HBO show, calling them "two complete lunatics who've never blinked once in their lives." Variety reported the remarks.
Oliver made the comment on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, a weekly comedy and current affairs show. During the segment he put up a picture of Holmes and Evans taken from You Can See Everything, a documentary made by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Holmes and Evans appear in the film.
The pair have a long history of public attention. Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors in 2022. According to Vanity Fair, she and Evans met in 2017.
The segment also turned to the show's own staff. Oliver said the team's fixation with You Can See Everything had "derailed our workflow to an unacceptable degree." He added a practical instruction for anyone who wanted to talk about the film: they should contact someone who works on Last Week Tonight.
The programme is a major award winner. HBO says the show has won 32 Emmy Awards, and lists its genres as Comedy, Variety, and Talk and Sketch. Its executive producers are John Oliver, Tim Carvell, Liz Stanton, Jon Thoday and James Taylor.
The documentary is the reason the names came up at all. A film about two people who have been in the headlines for years now has a second audience, this time through a comedy show's late-week segment. The exchange also shows how a documentary can spill into other programmes, with the mood set by one host and his team.
