Wayne Sleep, the former Royal Ballet dancer, has revealed that he has been undergoing treatment for cancer since the summer.

He shared the news in an Instagram post, saying he is in good spirits and feeling positive about the future. Hello! reports that he said the treatment appears to be working and that he is recovering with care from the Royal Marsden, the London hospital that specialises in cancer.

Sleep, who is 78, said he decided to speak out to address concerns from fans. Metro reports that the concerns followed comments about his recent appearance on the reality series I'm A Celebrity.

The diagnosis is not his first. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2015, after an MRI scan and a biopsy, which is a small sample of tissue taken for testing. The prostate is a gland in the male body, and the cancer was picked up after raised levels of a blood marker called PSA, short for prostate-specific antigen, were first found in 2010. GB News reports that the raised PSA levels were detected during routine health checks.

Sleep is best known as a dancer. He trained and performed with the Royal Ballet, the company based at the Royal Opera House in London. He is also remembered for his work with Diana, Princess of Wales. Hello! reports that he gave her clandestine ballet lessons, which led to a surprise dance duet with her at the Royal Opera House.

For many fans, the most striking part of the announcement is his tone. He did not describe the treatment in detail, and he has said the outlook is good. Anyone who wants to read his full message can find it in his Instagram post.

Sleep's announcement follows a familiar pattern for public figures who choose to talk about their health. He has told his followers what he knows, and he has said where he is getting care.
