Sunderland back Regis Le Bris after Coventry defeat

Sunderland lost 3-1 away to newly promoted Coventry, and the pressure on manager Regis Le Bris is building. The club's board is still backing him, BBC Sport reports, and it wants stability and what it calls collective responsibility, meaning everyone at the club shares the job of putting results right.
The numbers explain the concern. At the time of the BBC's report, Sunderland had won one of their first nine league matches. BBC Sport's live coverage had earlier put their goals conceded at 17 in those nine games. Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw, and Sunderland have been short of both.
In late October, Sky Sports reported that Sunderland sat bottom of the Premier League table with four points. Bottom means the team is in the relegation places, the spots that send the lowest finishers down a division at the end of the season. Earlier in the campaign, Bournemouth had beaten Sunderland 2-0 on 18 October.
Le Bris arrived from Lorient in France in 2024. In his first season in charge he led Sunderland back to the Premier League after an eight-year absence. Expectations have therefore been high, and the slow start has stung. In October 2025 he said that staying up was still the target. At the end of that year, he described 2025 as "really positive" because of the teamwork around the club.
The next test is at home. Chelsea are due at Sunderland on the Sunday before the international break, the pause when national teams play and club league fixtures stop for a short spell. Sunderland will have to show something on the pitch before the break gives everyone time to think.
For now, the board's message is patience with the manager and a shared load across the squad and staff. Whether results follow will decide how long that patience lasts.
