Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday and climbed out of the Premier League's relegation zone, the bottom three places that send clubs down at the end of the season. Before kick-off at Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry sat 19th. They had lost 1-0 at home to Fulham the previous Saturday.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto put Coventry ahead in the 17th minute. It was his first Premier League goal. Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the lead eight minutes before half-time, his first league goal for the club. Coventry kept pressing after the break, and Jack Rudoni made it 3-0 early in the second half.

Sunderland pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 67th minute. Enzo Le Fee sent goalkeeper Carl Rushworth the wrong way. The visitors then had to finish with ten men, after Omar Alderete was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.

For Sunderland, the defeat leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table. The Guardian reported that they have five points from nine league games, and only one point from five away matches. They are winless in seven, with two draws and five defeats. Their five points is their lowest total after nine games since 2016-17, when they had two points and were relegated. Head coach Regis Le Bris now faces a squad that has to find a way out of a hard run.

Coventry's manager Frank Lampard will be glad of a result that lifts the mood around the club. A win like this matters most in the weeks that follow, when a team either builds on it or slips back. Simon Hooper refereed the match, with Edward Smart as one of the assistant referees.

For casual fans, the lesson of the afternoon is simple. One side scored early, the other answered late, and a red card in added time sealed the ten-man finish. The table will tell the rest of the story over the coming weeks.
