Eiji Aonuma, producer of The Legend of Zelda series, asked his team to remake Ocarina of Time to mark the franchise's 40th anniversary. He has now explained why, in a Nintendo interview published as part of its Ask the Developer series.

A producer oversees a game's overall direction and makes sure the pieces come together. Ocarina of Time was the first Zelda game Aonuma worked on. He joined the original project partway through its development, so the game has been part of his career from early on.

The new version is a full remake, which means the game is rebuilt from the ground up rather than simply polished. Aonuma said that many members of the current Zelda team have only worked on the more recent entries in the series. Rebuilding an older game, he said, may give those developers new insights they can carry into future Zelda projects. Video Games Chronicle reported the same aim in its coverage of the interview.

Aonuma also said he did not hand developers a fixed list of changes. Instead, he let the team decide which elements of the original to keep and which to change. For a game many players remember closely, that call sits at the heart of any remake.

Aonuma has been open about how he feels as the launch approaches. In comments reported by Japan Today on 28 October 2026, he said he was nervous while waiting to see how players respond. The same report gave the release date as 5 November 2026.

For players, the practical news is simple. The remake is set to arrive on 5 November, and the team has said it hopes the work will shape how Zelda games are built next. Whether that hope pays off will show up over the coming years of new releases.
