Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 sells out in hours as resales soar
Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary Switch 2 sold out within hours of preorders opening, and resale listings quickly followed at steep mark-ups.
Listings on eBay were asking between US$700 and US$985, about £520 to £730, according to Eurogamer. Some sellers bundled the console with the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake. Nintendo is not offering that bundle itself.
Retailers had listed the special console for preorder at around £435. That is £15 more than the standard Switch 2. In the United States, the Anniversary Edition is priced at US$519.99 and does not include a game, according to IGN.
Preorders for the console and accessories opened through Target, Best Buy and GameStop. Nintendo had not made the console available for preorder through its own store at the time of reporting. Nintendo later issued a statement saying the anniversary collection was currently sold out.
The design marks the milestone clearly. It pairs Link-green Joy-Cons, the detachable controllers that slot onto the sides of the console, with a triangular pattern inspired by the golden glow of the Triforce, the series' three-part relic. The dock, the stand that connects the handheld to a television, carries a Triforce symbol on the front, according to Nintendo.
Matching accessories are releasing alongside it. The Anniversary Edition Pro Controller, a full-size wireless pad, is priced at US$99.99. The carrying case is priced at US$39.99. Nintendo also offers a Pro Controller plus display stand in the same anniversary styling.
The release dates are close together. Nintendo lists the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 with a release date of 29 October 2026. It confirms The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, a rebuilt version of the 1998 adventure, with a launch date of 5 November 2026.
The console was revealed around Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, a 30-minute online presentation scheduled for 8 September 2026 at 7am PT.
For fans, this means a short wait and a narrow window. Stock went fast. Resale prices are high. Anyone hoping for a second chance will need to watch retailers for a restock.
