Manuel García-Rulfo, an actor born in Guadalajara, will receive the honorary Árbol de la Vida Award at the GuadaLAjara Film Festival. Deadline reported the award will be presented at the festival's Opening Night Gala on Thursday, November 5, at the United Theater in Los Angeles.

The prize takes its name from the traditional Mexican Tree of Life, a decorated sculpture that is a familiar sight at Mexican celebrations. It honours people who have made a lasting impact on film, entertainment and culture. Earlier recipients include Yalitza Aparicio, Xolo Maridueña and Nava Mau.

The festival, known as GLAFF, runs from November 5 to 7. This edition is its sixteenth, and it is being held in Los Angeles, California. Its website lists three headline screenings. The Opening Night Gala film is Ceniza en la boca (Ashes), directed by Diego Luna. The Centerpiece Gala film is 14th, directed by Ava DuVernay. The Closing Night Gala film is Mexicanamerican, directed by Eddie Sánchez.

GLAFF also says it will give this year's box office proceeds to the AMBOS Project. Box office proceeds are the money collected from ticket sales.

García-Rulfo's screen work includes The Lincoln Lawyer and Pedro Páramo, according to a Hola profile published in October 2024.

For readers in Los Angeles, the weekend puts a Mexican film festival on the calendar in the same week as its honouree's Guadalajara roots are being celebrated on stage.
