Jeremy Renner and Josh Brolin are set to headline A Speck in the Sea, a survival thriller based on a true story, Deadline reported on 3 November 2026.

The film follows Johnny Aldridge, a lobster fisherman from Montauk, New York. In 2013, Aldridge fell off his fishing boat into the Atlantic Ocean at night. Brolin plays Aldridge. Renner plays Anthony Sosinski.

Orlando von Einsiedel is directing, from a screenplay by Jeff Pope. Von Einsiedel won an Academy Award, the Oscar, for directing the short documentary The White Helmets. He was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature for Virunga.

The producers are Mark Bauch, for One Day's Walk, and Jonathan Eirich, for Rideback. Deadline also reported the film's business arrangements. 193, a Legendary company, is handling international sales for the film at the American Film Market, the industry event in Santa Monica where distributors from around the world look for films to license for their own countries. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent are co-representing North American rights, meaning the right to release the film in the United States and Canada.

Why it matters for audiences: a film's cast and crew are set early, but the sales talks at a market like this decide which countries will see it and through which distributors. For a story built around one man alone at sea, those early choices shape how the picture gets made and sold long before it reaches a cinema or a streaming service.
