Louis Paxton is making his feature debut with The Incomer, a dark comedy-drama that has Domhnall Gleeson, Gayle Rankin and John Hannah in its cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film has backing from Focus Features, Universal Pictures International and Moby.

The story is set on a remote Scottish island, where two siblings live in isolation. Gleeson plays Daniel, an awkward council worker whose job is to move them to the mainland. A dark comedy-drama blends laughs with a darker undertone, and the setup suggests the pair will have plenty to argue about before the boat leaves.

Paxton wrote and directed the film himself. He grew up in Edinburgh, and his mother's family comes from Orkney, one of the island groups off the north coast of Scotland. Casting for the film was led by Kharmel Cochrane.

The project has a longer history than its debut label suggests. In 2014, Paxton's script The Spare Room was one of three featured at the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum alongside the writer Paula Milne, with Chris Brand directing that script for the event. In 2021, the BAFTA Scotland Awards credited Paxton, with Grant O'Rourke, on the short film Neville is Dead.

Recognition has built up over the years. Paxton was named to the 2026 BAFTA Breakthrough list, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts scheme that spotlights emerging British talent, and the list is supported by Netflix. Screen Daily also included him in its Rising Stars Scotland 2026 list as a writer and director.

For a first feature, the combination is a useful one to watch. A director with a short film, a festival-circuit script and a place on two talent lists now has a cast of established names and a set of backers. No release date, distribution plan for cinemas or streaming, or box-office target has been announced so far. Those decisions usually follow once a film is finished, and they will be the next thing to look for.
