Democrat Josh Turek won Iowa's U.S. Senate race, defeating Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson, according to a race call by The Associated Press. NBC News and CBS News also projected Turek as the winner. The election was held Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The seat was open because Republican Sen. Joni Ernst announced last year that she would not seek a third term. Turek's win ended more than a decade of Republican control of both of Iowa's U.S. Senate seats, according to NPR. The Guardian reported that it was the first time since 2008 that a Democrat had won election to the U.S. Senate in Iowa.

Turek is a state representative from Council Bluffs. He is also a two-time gold medalist in Paralympic basketball. In June, he beat former state Senate minority leader Zach Wahls to win the Democratic nomination. Former President Barack Obama endorsed Turek in July.

Hinson received an endorsement from President Donald Trump shortly after she announced her candidacy. In October, Trump traveled to Iowa to boost turnout for her, the Associated Press reported. Trump carried Iowa by 13 points in 2024.

The race drew heavy spending. Candidates together raised more than $30 million, and outside groups contributed more than $100 million, according to NPR. Libertarian Thomas Laehn was also on the ballot.

Reuters reported that Turek's victory flipped a Republican-held Senate seat in Iowa.
