"Imposters" Finds a U.S. Distributor and an Early 2027 Release

Brainstorm Media has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "Imposters," the science-fiction thriller that began its life at the SXSW festival in Austin, and plans a cinema release in early 2027, Variety reported on 4 November 2026.
The film is a first feature for director and screenwriter Caleb Phillips. Jessica Rothe leads the cast. Her character's story starts with a terrible event: a couple's baby boy is abducted. The mother finds a way to get him back, but her husband begins to suspect that the child she brings home is not their son.
Brainstorm Media's deal covers the United States and Canada, which the trade calls "domestic." That is the territory where studios usually count their box-office takings, so the early 2027 window puts the film on American screens at a time when the calendar is less crowded than the autumn and holiday months. No opening date has been announced yet.
Most of the film's international deals were struck through its sales company, Blue Finch Films, which handles sales and distribution in the U.K. The company closed a long list of territory deals in the run-up to the American Film Market, the industry's deal-making week for independent films, which is held each year in Santa Monica. A territory deal sells the right to show a film in one country or region. Variety listed the following buyers:
- Vortex, Canada
- Umbrella Entertainment, Australia and New Zealand
- Tiberius, Germany
- VOD Factory, France
- A Contracorriente Films, Spain
- Vendetta Filmes, Portugal
- Plaion, Italy
- PremiereTV, Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg)
- Red Castle Group, the CIS countries of the former Soviet Union
- Media4Fun, Poland
- Particular Crowd, Latin America
- Falcon Films, the Middle East and North Africa
- BookMyShow, India
- Penny Black, airline rights, meaning in-flight screens on planes
Blue Finch Films will release the film itself in the U.K. and Ireland. It also has worldwide sales rights, a deal first reported in January 2026.
The film then travelled the festival circuit. After its Austin premiere, it screened at Beyond Fest, the Chicago festival, BiFan in South Korea, the Edinburgh Film Festival and Sitges in Spain. Festivals are often where sales companies and buyers first see a film with an eye to who might want it, so that run helped set up the deals that followed.
The production team is also new to features. Thomas Bond and Sara Seligman produced the film for Broken Pig Productions, which made "Imposters" as its first feature. Joe Bandelli of Marylous' Boys is also credited as a producer. Phillips's earlier short, "Other Side of the Box," won awards at SXSW and BiFan.
A teaser trailer was released in March 2026, which gave audiences their first moving look at the film ahead of these deals.
For a first-time director, a U.S. distributor and a run of buyers across more than a dozen territories is a full calendar. The next thing to watch is the official U.S. release date, which will show how Brainstorm Media plans to bring the film to cinemas.
