Western Australian police have charged a 40-year-old Perth woman over the alleged stalking and attempted extortion of Greens senator Jordon Steele-John. Police announced the charges on Wednesday.

Detectives from the family violence investigation squad charged the woman with one count of aggravated stalking with intent to intimidate. She also faces one count of demanding property by written threats, which is commonly known as extortion. Police allege she is a former partner of the senator, according to The Guardian.

The woman is due to appear in a Perth magistrates court on Thursday morning. A spokesperson for Steele-John said the senator will not comment further on the investigation at this time.

The charges follow a period of public scrutiny of the senator. Steele-John did not attend parliament last week after Greens members sent a three-page letter to Greens leader David Shoebridge. The letter urged an investigation into allegations that he acted inappropriately toward women between 2017 and 2025.

Steele-John has denied all allegations made against him. He did so in a 2,400-word statement responding to a report by Nine newspapers. Complaints against him are the subject of an independent investigation commissioned by the WA Greens, and have been referred to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission.

In an earlier statement, Steele-John said a woman he briefly dated had falsely claimed he removed condoms during sex, as news.com.au reported.

The woman accused by Steele-John of harassment says she never consented to having intimate details made public. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the senator revealed relationship details online before she spoke out.
