Iran has unveiled a large billboard and banners in central Tehran that pledge to kill US President Donald Trump. The English text on the display reads "We will kill Trump," according to The Guardian.

The billboard was put up over Enqelab Square, one of the city's best-known public spaces, and shows Trump behind bars with his head bowed. Reuters dated its footage of a banner depicting Trump behind bars in Tehran to November 3. Forbes described the new billboard as the latest display against the US president, while Arab News reported that it was unveiled on Tuesday.

The Guardian linked the display to joy in Iran over Trump's defeat in the US midterm elections, the national votes held in November to choose members of Congress. The timing also falls near a date of significance to Iran's leadership. November 4 marks the anniversary, which the leadership celebrates, of the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Tehran.

Reuters said its footage of the banner was made available with restrictions on which broadcasters could use it, including Israeli media, Persian-language stations based outside Iran, and the BBC.

Trump's relations with Iran have been strained for years, and public messages of this kind have appeared in Tehran before. The billboard's wording is a direct threat against a sitting US president, the kind of content that draws close attention from American officials and security agencies. Its appearance in one of the capital's most visible squares means it has reached a wide public audience in Iran and abroad.
