JD Vance said on November 4, 2026 that the war against Iran caused the Republican Party to lose the U.S. midterm elections. In a post on X, he wrote that "The real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone ... The reason we lost is the war." The Guardian reported his remarks.

Vance also said Republicans had lost the Senate for the next six years as a cost of the conflict. He said President Donald Trump had himself said the previous night that the Iran war caused the Republican losses. NBC News reported Vance's comments on the same day.

Midterm elections are held midway through a president's term. Voters use them to choose members of Congress, including the Senate and the House of Representatives, and the results can change which party controls each chamber.

Trump's own account of the election has been more limited. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on November 3, 2026, he was asked about the war's impact on the election and said that "Iran was a piece of it." He also said he had no regrets about starting the conflict and would have done it again.

Trump launched the war against Iran in February, alongside Israel. The conflict has been a central issue in the midterm campaign.

Separately, House Republican leader Johnson is not running for the party's leadership post, according to sources cited by CNN. The decision followed gains by Democrats in the 2026 midterms.
