Speaker Mike Johnson Does Not Plan to Stay On as Republican Leader

House Speaker Mike Johnson does not plan to stay on as Republican leader in the new Congress, according to a source familiar with his plans, NPR reported on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
Johnson told staffers that he will not run for minority leader in the new Congress, CBS News reported. The Washington Post also reported that Johnson will not seek the position, citing a top aide as its source. NBC News published a report the same day saying that Johnson will not stay on as Republican leader.
Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, became speaker in 2023 after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California was ousted. He has served two terms as speaker. In January 2025, he was reelected to the post by a razor-thin margin, Reuters reported.
House Republicans are scheduled to hold their leadership elections on Nov. 10. The outcome will determine who leads the party's members in the chamber next year.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York is the presumptive next House speaker, the chamber's top officer, who is chosen by the members of the House. If he is elected, Jeffries would be the first Black lawmaker to hold the post.
