Maya Hawke is set to join the live-action Magic: The Gathering movie, Deadline reported on 4 November 2026, in an exclusive.

The role she will play has not been disclosed. Hawke is best known to many viewers for her part in the Netflix series Stranger Things, and she has built a career across film and television since then.

The project is a partnership between Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind a long run of large-scale films, and Hasbro Entertainment, the entertainment arm of the toy and games company Hasbro. Together they plan a live-action feature film and a television universe based on Magic: The Gathering. A universe means a set of stories sharing one world and characters, so the film could be the first of several screen projects rather than a single standalone title.

Magic: The Gathering is a trading card game first released in 1993. Players build decks of cards and battle each other, and the game has a large following of players and collectors. The game is published by Wizards of the Coast, a Hasbro company, which is why the brand sits under Hasbro's ownership.

Matt Johnson will direct the film. He will also co-write the script with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, according to the same Deadline report. Johnson is a Canadian filmmaker who writes, directs and often stars in his own work, a mix that gives the project a single creative voice from the page to the set.

For fans of the card game, the news means a familiar name is moving from the tabletop toward the cinema screen. Hasbro has been bringing its games and brands to film and television for years, and this partnership adds another title to that list.

Casting in the film industry often moves in stages. Deadline's report describes Hawke as set to join, and the production has not yet shared more about her role or the wider cast.

For now, the confirmed pieces are a shared-universe plan, a director and writing team, and an actor who will appear in the film. Further casting, a production start and a release window are not yet on the public record.
