Documentary Just Look Up Gets December Cinema Run Ahead of 2027 Wider Release
Magnolia Pictures has set a cinema run for Just Look Up that could make the documentary eligible for Academy Awards consideration. Deadline reported the arrangement as an exclusive on 4 November 2026.
The film opens for one week in New York and Los Angeles beginning 4 December. Those short city runs are how many documentaries qualify for the Oscars, which require a paid theatrical screening in specified cities before the awards deadline. A wider release is planned for the first quarter of 2027, when more cinemas across the country are expected to show it.
The film is about Michael Greenberg, the founder of Climate Defiance, an activist group focused on climate change. Betsy Hershey and Emma Wall directed it. Adam McKay and Joshua Oppenheimer are executive producers, and Signe Byrge Sørensen and Natja Rosner produced it.
The soundtrack includes songs by Chappell Roan, Doechii and Billie Eilish. Music in a documentary is a creative and financial decision, since the rights to each song have to be licensed before a film can be shown in cinemas.
The film is a co-production between the United States and Denmark. It had its world premiere at CPH:DOX, the documentary festival in Copenhagen, where it won the F:ACT Award. Festivals like CPH:DOX are where many documentaries first find buyers and distributors, and where sales agents decide which films move on to cinemas.
In a Variety interview earlier in 2026, Wall and Hershey discussed working with McKay on the project.
The film runs 94 minutes. Its New York and Los Angeles dates fall in the weeks before the year-end holidays, a busy stretch for films hoping to build word of mouth before the awards season arrives in earnest. Anyone who wants to see it in those two cities can look for listings from 4 December. Everyone else will have to wait for the wider release in early 2027.
