Democrats were projected by US media outlets to win back control of both chambers of Congress, the national lawmaking body made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Reuters reported the projections on November 4, 2026, after the midterm elections held Tuesday. Republicans did not keep control of the Senate.

Democrats took seven Senate seats in races across states that usually vote Republican and in closely contested states, according to the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, NPR published an interview in which Ailsa Chang asked former congressman and Obama adviser Rahm Emanuel about the strategy Democrats should follow now that they will soon control both houses. The conversation was heard on NPR's All Things Considered program. The NPR article is titled "Rahm Emanuel maps out a vision for what Democrats can achieve after taking Congress."

Emanuel has spoken about the timing of any early action. In a PBS NewsHour segment published October 30, he said Democrats should act within the first three months after the midterms. He named restricting tariffs, which are taxes on goods brought in from other countries, as one step.

Before the vote, CNBC's "Squawk Box" team discussed what was at stake in the midterm elections with Emanuel. The CNBC video was posted November 3.
