Matt Damon has revealed that his wife, Luciana Barroso, had brain surgery for an aneurysm in early 2024. He made the disclosure in a cover story for GQ magazine, as Variety reported on 5 November 2026. She is also known as Luciana Damon.

An aneurysm is a weak, bulging spot in a blood vessel. When one bursts or needs treatment, the repair is serious brain surgery. Barroso's operation took place one week before the 96th Academy Awards, the ceremony held in March 2024.

The couple did not attend the ceremony because of the surgery. They did go to an after-party that night. Damon starred in Oppenheimer, and the film won Best Picture at that ceremony.

Barroso is now well again. Entertainment Weekly reports that, as of November 2026, she is fully recovered and "totally fine." US Magazine and People also covered the reveal.

For awards watchers, the timing stands out. A medical emergency unfolded in the weeks before one of the film industry's most watched nights. Damon's account of that stretch, given two and a half years later, is the first public detail of it from his side.

Damon has not, in the reporting so far, said more about the procedure itself.
