Democrats flipped five Republican-held U.S. House seats in North Carolina in the November 2026 elections, according to NPR.

The seats that changed hands included the state's 6th, 9th, 11th and 13th Congressional Districts, according to WUNC. Each of those districts had been considered safely Republican, WUNC reported. Congressional districts are the areas that elect members to the U.S. House of Representatives.

All four Democratic incumbents in the state's U.S. House delegation were re-elected, according to CBS17. One of the flipped seats had been held by Republicans since the 1990s and was mostly represented by Rep. Virginia Foxx, according to The News & Observer.

In the state's U.S. Senate race, Democrat Roy Cooper won the seat, according to the Associated Press. Cooper celebrated in Raleigh on election night, according to Reuters.

Nationally, Democrats won control of both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections, the Associated Press reported. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to win the House majority, and Reuters reported that they secured it after flipping more than two dozen Republican-held seats. Kentucky and New Jersey were among the states where Republican-held House seats changed to Democratic control. Before the Senate contest, Republicans held a 53-47 majority in that chamber.

Redistricting, the process of redrawing district boundaries, played a role in the North Carolina races. Republicans redrew the state's 1st Congressional District before the 2026 elections, according to the Associated Press. The seat is held by Democratic Rep. Don Davis. Federal judges had also allowed North Carolina to use a redrawn congressional map designed to give Republicans one more U.S. House seat, the Associated Press reported.

President Donald Trump won North Carolina three times, according to NPR.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has published unofficial results for the November 3, 2026, general election, including the U.S. House contests.
