Buena Vista Social Club Will Close on Broadway in January 2027

Buena Vista Social Club will close on Broadway on January 17, 2027. Deadline reported the date, which its producers announced. By the final performance, the musical will have run 96 weeks and 767 performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.

The show began previews, the early performances that run before opening night, on February 21, 2025. It opened on March 19, 2025. The musical centers on Omara Portuondo, the Cuban singer once known as the "Queen of Feeling." Its score is the first on Broadway performed entirely in Spanish. Marco Ramirez wrote the book, Saheem Ali directed, and Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck created the choreography.

The production has collected honors from both stage and studio. It won five Tony Awards, the theater industry's top prizes. They include Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Natalie Venetia Belcon, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and a Special Tony for its 10-piece band. The cast album also won a Grammy Award.

The money tells a more mixed story. The show's capitalization, the money raised to get the doors open, was reported at $17 million. It has not yet recoup, meaning it has not paid back that original investment from its earnings. Producers say it is on schedule to do so before it closes.

For the week ending November 1, the show grossed $678,878. Gross is the total ticket revenue before any costs are paid. Attendance reached 89% of the Schoenfeld's capacity, meaning the share of available seats that were filled.

The lead producer is Orin Wolf. The Broadway team also includes John Styles, Barbara Broccoli, Atlantic Theater Company, Luis Miranda, LaChanze and John Leguizamo. In June, Wolf and Broccoli told Deadline that the producers were eyeing a London transfer, a move of the production to a new theater in another city. The November announcement says a West End production in London is scheduled to begin in 2027. BroadwayWorld also reported that productions are expanding to Dallas and Puerto Rico.

The producers also say the show has drawn the highest number of Hispanic ticket buyers in the history of The Shubert Organization, the company that owns the Schoenfeld and many other Broadway houses.

Closings have their own kind of work. When a show ends, its set is taken apart, the costumes are packed, and the crew loads everything into trucks, sometimes in a single night. A closing date gives the company a fixed last performance, and the people who build and move the show usually have their next booking lined up before the lights go down.
