A Tanzanian court has cleared opposition leader Tundu Lissu of treason, the most serious charge he faced, but convicted him of incitement. The ruling was issued on November 6, 2026, according to Reuters.

Lissu was sentenced to four years in prison for incitement, meaning the offence of encouraging others to commit a crime. ABC News reported that the conviction involved inciting people to disrupt an election.

The ruling was delivered by a three-judge panel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city and its commercial hub. Treason, the charge he was cleared of, refers to acts that are alleged to betray or threaten the state. The court's decision on that count means he will not face a treason conviction.

Lissu is the main leader of Tanzania's opposition, and the verdict marks a significant point in his long-running legal proceedings. Both the treason count and the incitement conviction arose from the same case, and the court ruled on each separately.

The court's decision leaves the four-year sentence as the outcome of the case. Lissu's conviction is the final ruling reported from the Dar es Salaam hearing.
