Common has joined Dana Nachman's short documentary The Second Life of Freddie Nole as an executive producer, Variety reported on 6 November 2026. An executive producer is a credit usually given to someone who helps back a project, rather than to the person who runs the day-to-day shoot.

The film tells the story of Freddie Nole. He was sentenced to life in prison at 17, and he spent nearly 50 years behind bars before he regained his freedom. The documentary focuses on reentry, the difficult return to life outside prison, and on redemption.

Common won the 2015 Academy Award for best original song for his work on Selma. He is also known to television viewers for playing Robert Sims in Apple TV's drama Silo.

The film premiered in June at the Tribeca Festival in New York. It has since screened at DC/DOX, Raindance in London, HollyShorts and the Hamptons International Film Festival. It also earned a nomination for best short documentary at the 2026 Critics Choice Documentary Awards.

Festival juries and audiences have given it prizes too. It won best short at the Philadelphia Film Festival, according to Variety, which reported the win on 4 November 2026. A separate Facebook post from the DIFF Shorts festival in Dallas says the film took the Audience Award for Documentary Short in 2026.

The next scheduled screening is at Firehouse Cinemas at DCTV in New York City on Tuesday, 10 November 2026. Common is scheduled to attend that screening.

Short documentaries often travel on the festival circuit for months before a wider audience sees them, and a screening with a well-known executive producer in the room can draw a different crowd than a festival listing alone. The film's route so far has run mostly through festivals in the United States and Britain, with the November date in New York the next stop on that run.
