Disney Is Developing a Live-Action Medusa Movie, With Dwayne Johnson's Company Producing

Disney is developing a live-action movie about Medusa, the snake-haired figure of Greek myth, according to Deadline, which broke the news on 6 November 2026.
Michael Montemayor is writing the first draft. Deadline reports that the details of his take on the story are being kept under wraps. Melissa Ford is overseeing the project for the studio.
The film is being developed by Seven Bucks, the production company run by Dwayne Johnson with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Under its deal with Disney, Seven Bucks develops and produces projects for the studio. Johnson is producing Medusa with his partners, but he is not set to star. Matt Smith is also producing, through Electro Corduroy Entertainment.
Montemayor has a busy calendar at Disney. He worked on the studio's live-action Tangled, directed by Michael Gracey, which is set for cinemas on 31 March 2028. He is also writing Stepsisters, an original live-action Cinderella spin-off, with Akiva Schaffer attached to direct and produce. Earlier this year, he sold an original romantic comedy, Court Date, to Netflix, with Berlanti/Schechter Films producing.
The Medusa project builds on a relationship that is already on the books. In June 2024, Seven Bucks signed a first-look deal with Disney. A first-look deal gives a studio the first chance to buy or make a producer's projects, before those projects are offered elsewhere. Johnson and his partners previously worked with the studio on Jungle Cruise, and under the same arrangement they are producing a live-action remake of Moana, in which Johnson plays Maui.
Nothing about Medusa has a release date yet, and no cast has been announced. Deadline's report describes the project at an early stage, with a writer on the first draft and a producing team in place.
For Disney, the film adds one more name to a slate built around reworking existing stories for the big screen. For Seven Bucks, it is another step in a partnership that began with a single deal and has grown project by project.
