Céline Dion was spotted playing air bass, miming a bass guitar that is not there, during Metallica's show at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Thursday, 5 November. Billboard reported that she was copying the playing of Robert Trujillo, the band's bassist, as he performed alongside guitarist Kirk Hammett.

The moment came during an instrumental section that the band calls "Kirk and Rob Doodle." The reported setlist for that segment on the night included "Motown Yo Town" and "Copenhagen."

Dion later posted a clip of herself playing air bass at the show, according to The Modesto Bee. Guitarist Slash of Guns N' Roses was also reportedly seen in the suite, and members of No Doubt were among the other musicians in the audience.

The show is part of Metallica's Life Burns Faster residency, which opened at the Sphere on 1 October. The residency uses a format the band calls No Repeat Weekend, in which the paired Thursday and Saturday concerts each feature a different setlist. The Saturday, 7 November concert closes the 2026 part of the run, and dates resume in January 2027.

Dion's own connection to the band goes back further. Her personal playlist, shared earlier this year, included Metallica's 1996 single "Until It Sleeps." She has also said that one of her twin sons, Eddy, names Metallica as his favourite band.

The appearance comes a few months after Dion returned to full-length concerts in September, following a six-year break from touring. She announced in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes muscle stiffness and spasms.

Air bass is a small, playful habit that fans have long performed at concerts. This time, a global pop star did it in front of one of the world's best-known rock bands, and the clip travelled quickly.
