Guiseley beat Sutton United 1-0 in the FA Cup first round on Saturday, and the only goal came deep into added time. Jordan Thewlis scored a penalty in the 95th minute at Nethermoor Park.

Stoppage time is the extra minutes the referee adds at the end of each half to make up for pauses like injuries and substitutions. Thewlis's spot kick arrived in the last of those minutes, and it was enough to settle the tie.

Guiseley play in the seventh tier of English football, seven levels below the Premier League. The FA Cup is open to clubs from the very bottom of the professional game right up to the richest in the land, which is why the early rounds produce so many upsets. Sutton United were the visitors, and their captain Jake Taylor led the side. Joe Knight and Emmanuel Osadebe played in midfield alongside him.

The pairing was set when The FA made the draw in October, listing the match as tie 32 of the first round. Guiseley have had to work hard for wins at this stage. According to The FA's own statistics, they had moved past the first round in only two of their ten previous attempts.

For a club at Guiseley's level, a place in the second round means a fresh challenge against opponents from higher up the pyramid. It also means a few more weeks in the spotlight. Stories like this one tend to be remembered long after the final whistle, especially when the decisive moment comes so late.

The goal did not come from open play. It came from a penalty, awarded and taken in the final seconds of normal time, with the home crowd watching the spot. That kind of moment is why so many people keep following the Cup, even when their own team is not involved.
