Joel Randall scored the winner in the 89th minute as Chesterfield beat Yeovil Town 4-3 in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

The FA Cup is the knockout competition open to clubs across the English game, from the Premier League down to village sides. Its first round is the opening stage, and one slip can end a club's run before it has started. Chesterfield are a League Two side, the fourth tier of the English league system, and they had to dig deep to get through.

Yeovil, playing away, looked to be heading out. They trailed 3-1 before a second-half fightback levelled the tie at 3-3, according to the BBC's live coverage. Plenty of teams would have settled for a replay at that point. Instead, the match swung again, and Randall had the final say.

Chesterfield's late winner decided a tie that had been swinging back and forth all afternoon. The FA's round-up confirms the timing and the scorer. Randall's goal came close to the final whistle, and it was the moment that turned a tense contest into a celebration for the home side.

For Yeovil, the defeat is a painful one. They showed they could come back from two goals down, but they could not stop the winner. Their club's own match report describes an afternoon of ups and downs, and the scoreline reflects how even the game was for long spells.

This was also the second time the two clubs have met in the FA Cup proper, the stage of the competition after the qualifying rounds. Earlier meetings between them are a small piece of the competition's history, and this one adds another chapter.

For Chesterfield, the win moves them into the next round of the competition. Their next opponent will be decided in the draw for the second round. For neutral fans, it is the kind of result the FA Cup does so well: a lower-league side, a comeback, a goal in the last minutes, and a result nobody could have written in advance.
