National wins 42 seats as New Zealand's vote count continues

National has won 42 seats in New Zealand's general election, and ACT has won 13, according to Reuters. Reuters also reported that around 14% of votes were still uncounted in the preliminary results.

The election was held on 7 November. National's leader, Christopher Luxon, sought a second term, and he spoke after the result. Luxon, who is 56, survived confidence votes by National MPs in April and again in August 2026. A confidence vote is a formal test of whether MPs in the governing party still back their leader.

National won two of the three general electorates, according to RNZ. RNZ also reported that turnout was on track to be the second lowest in New Zealand's history.

Turnout was measured against a large roll. Elections NZ said in October that nearly 3.8 million people were enrolled to vote.

NZ First deputy leader Shane Jones has ruled out working with Labour, RNZ reported.

Preliminary results have been released progressively from 7:00pm on electionresults.govt.nz. These are early counts and are not final. The official results are scheduled to be declared on Friday 27 November, according to Elections NZ.
