Democrats Flip Arizona Legislature, North Carolina House

Democrats won control of both chambers of the Arizona legislature and flipped the North Carolina House in the November 3, 2026 elections, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
In Arizona, Democrats also won the governor's office, according to PBS NewsHour. PBS reported that it is the first time Democrats have won the House, Senate and governor's office in Arizona since 1966. The win also gives Democrats control of the state legislature for the first time in 60 years.
State legislatures make laws for each state. Most have two chambers, or halves, and the 88 chambers up for election this year are spread across the country. As of November 6, Ballotpedia counted 46 chambers won by Democrats and 39 won by Republicans. Some results were still not counted in that tally.
NPR reported on Sunday, November 8, on state legislatures that have changed hands, with a focus on North Carolina and Arizona. The report aired as part of its Weekend Edition Sunday program.
The state results come alongside national contests. NPR reported that Democrats flipped control of the U.S. House and Senate, securing at least 54 Senate seats. Reuters reported that Democrats flipped more than two dozen Republican-held U.S. House seats, with Kentucky and New Jersey among the states where seats changed hands.
NPR also reported that Democrats flipped several state legislatures and won trifectas in some key states. A trifecta means one party controls both chambers of a state legislature and the governor's office.
Unofficial results for North Carolina's November 3 general election are posted by the State Board of Elections. Arizona's Secretary of State also publishes unofficial results on its website, and those results are updated as they come in.
