World of Warcraft: Forever Launch Sets Record, Blizzard Says

Blizzard says World of Warcraft: Forever drew more concurrent players, meaning more people online at the same moment, than any earlier launch of the long-running online game. The studio made the claim on 7 November 2026, three days after the game went live.
The game launched on 4 November 2026 at 3 p.m. Pacific time. Blizzard also said the launch set a record for returning players, meaning people who came back to the game after time away.
Holly Longdale, the game's executive producer and vice president, said the launch brought in more new players than any World of Warcraft launch in 15 years, according to Eurogamer. Blizzard has not published its actual player numbers. The company has said the launch now ranks as the biggest in the game's history, ahead of the earlier expansion Wrath of the Lich King, as Windows Central reported.
The game is set in an updated and expanded version of Azeroth, the fantasy world where the series takes place. It includes familiar landscapes and new locations, along with new stories. Beta testing began on 17 September 2026, giving players a chance to try the game before launch.
Some of the biggest changes are in how a player starts. Before creating a character, players choose a Ruleset, a set of rules that shapes the kind of experience they want. The game also does not ask players to pick from a long list of realms, the servers where players gather, which is a different approach from earlier versions of the game.
Progression has changed too. At launch, players can spend up to 16 points in total on each character through the game's Legacy System, a set of options for building up each character.
The company has not yet released the numbers behind them. For new and returning players, the first decisions now come before the first step into the world: which Ruleset to pick, and how to build the first character.
