Two Polish police officers were wounded while pursuing and detaining a gunman who killed six people and injured 17 in Krakow on Saturday. Both officers have been named by the Polish media and by officials, and both are under 30 years old.

According to The Guardian, the suspect is a 24-year-old Polish national who was firing at random from his car on Krakow's main square. Police reached the scene 23 seconds after the first emergency call from the square.

Jakub Kulik, a former paratrooper and volunteer firefighter from Bielsko-Biała in southern Poland, was left critically injured after a close-range exchange of fire with the suspect. He was hit by three bullets and underwent surgery on Saturday. Artur Morański, who comes from Powroźnik, a village about 150 km south-east of Krakow near the Slovak border, was shot in the chest area and also had surgery. Both men hold the rank of senior constable.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the two officers as "true heroes" on Saturday. He said they had probably saved many lives while disregarding the risk to themselves. Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek said the officers' rapid response and heroism had prevented further casualties.

Both injured officers were brought out of medically induced comas on Sunday, according to The Guardian.

Poland has opened a terrorism investigation into the attack. The shooter is believed to have been inspired by far-right ideologies, the Times of Israel reported.
