Wimborne Town beat Crawley Town to reach FA Cup second round

Wimborne Town, a seventh-tier club, have beaten League Two side Crawley Town 2-0 in the FA Cup and reached the second round for the first time in their history.
The seventh tier sits well down English football's ladder, far below the professional leagues. League Two is the fourth tier, and Crawley were bottom of it when they came to Dorset on Sunday 8 November. The FA Cup is the oldest knockout competition in football, open to clubs from across the pyramid, so one round can bring a giant-killing or two.
The first goal came early. According to Sky Sports, S Yang scored for Wimborne in the 9th minute. The home side then held their advantage against a team that had spent the season near the bottom of the table.
This was a big day for a club with a small stage. Wimborne had only one previous first-round tie before this season, in 1982-83, when they lost 4-0 away at Aldershot. The club's own preview noted that this was the first time they had hosted an FA Cup first-round match, and the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
The match was also shown live on television. The club announced that TNT Sports 1 would broadcast it, with coverage from 2:30pm and a 3pm kick-off.
Wimborne have a memorable past in the competition's shadow. They won the FA Vase, the national cup for non-league clubs, in 1993, beating Guiseley 5-3 in the final at Wembley. That is the only major national trophy on their record, and it is the kind of day supporters still talk about.
For a club used to playing in front of small crowds, a win like this brings something bigger than a result. It gives the next round a new kind of expectation, and a fresh chance to see how far an unfancied side can go. The draw for the second round will decide whether that journey continues.
