The app was created by Eric Wolfram, who originally built it for his son. Wolfram's operating philosophy, as he described it, is simple: "Small actions, repeated over time, shape who you are. Becoming who you are is a lifelong project."
Users start by selecting an identity they want to embody — "lifelong learner," "classics reader," "chess player," and so on. MeBeMe then sends push notifications containing quick tasks related to that chosen identity. The core mechanism is an interruption model: the app does not restrict access to other apps or impose lockouts. Instead, it intercedes with a lightweight, actionable prompt, betting that the user will redirect to a productive micro-task rather than return to passive scrolling.
MeBeMe offers more than 75 identities across four categories. Mind includes mathematician, scientist, historian, and chess player. Body covers athlete, dancer, cyclist, and runner. A relationships category and a home-based interests category round out the catalog, the latter covering activities like cooking and gardening.
Users can select multiple identities at the same time and control how often notifications arrive, ranging from daily to occasional. A feature called "Break Your Scroll" uses Siri to read notification messages aloud, adding a voice-based interruption layer that does not require the user to even look at the screen.
On the privacy front, MeBeMe requires no account. All user data is stored on-device — meaning it stays on the phone itself rather than being sent to a company's servers — and users can opt out of anonymous usage data sharing entirely. The app is available as a free download for iOS, with no ads and no subscription tier. An Android version is listed as coming soon.
The broader context here is worth considering. The screen-time and digital wellness category has been dominated by two approaches: hard blockers that restrict app access (Apple's Screen Time, various third-party app lockers) and usage dashboards that surface metrics about time spent. Neither has proven especially sticky. Users tend to override blockers or ignore dashboards, and engagement with these tools drops off rapidly after initial setup.
