Both Samsung and Google have been more conservative with wearable update windows than with phones.

Five years on a smartwatch is still a meaningful step. A wearable purchased in 2026 receiving Wear OS builds through 2031 means the device could see four major platform iterations, assuming Google maintains a roughly annual Wear OS release cadence. Whether the underlying hardware, particularly the battery and the SoC (the watch's main processor), remains viable across that span is a separate question from whether the software support exists. Samsung is now making the software commitment; the hardware endurance will be tested in the field.

The competitive dynamic is worth noting. Samsung and Google are the two primary Wear OS device makers. Google sets the platform; Samsung ships the volume. When the licensee outbids the platform owner on update longevity, it sends a signal about where each company sees the differentiation battle being fought. Google may respond with a longer Pixel Watch commitment on its next generation, which would normalize five-year support across the Wear OS ecosystem.

For enterprise and fleet buyers, longer update windows matter for a straightforward reason: device replacement cycles are expensive, and security patch availability governs whether a wearable can remain in a managed deployment. Samsung's five-year security patch policy, already extended to older Galaxy wearables, aligns with the kind of support window that IT departments look for when evaluating whether a consumer-grade wearable can serve in a workplace context.

The practical takeaway for buyers of the Galaxy Watch 9 and Ultra 2 is that these devices will receive Wear OS platform updates through 2031, starting from Wear OS 7. That is one year more than the Watch 8 received and two years more than the current Pixel Watch offers. The security patch timeline is even longer, extending to prior Samsung wearable models as well. Whether the hardware holds up across that full window is an open question, but the software commitment is now the longest Samsung has offered on a smartwatch.
