Cambridge's Hannah Fry Wins the Leelavati Prize for Mathematical Outreach

Professor Hannah Fry has been awarded the Leelavati Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), currently underway in Philadelphia from 23–30 July 2026. The prize is awarded by the International Mathematical Union (IMU) every four years and announced at the ICM. It recognises outstanding contributions to increasing public awareness of mathematics (University of Cambridge).
Fry holds the title of Professor of the Public Understanding of Mathematics in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. She joined Cambridge in January 2025 as the first person ever to hold that role (University of Cambridge). The chair itself is a recent institutional signal that mathematics departments are beginning to treat public communication as a core academic function rather than an extracurricular activity.
The prize citation describes Fry as "one of the foremost global ambassadors for mathematical thinking" and "a voice for mathematics that resonates far beyond the public audience normally interested in science communication." Previous recipients of the Leelavati Prize include Nikolai Andreev in 2022 and Ali Nesin in 2018 (IMU). The four-year cycle places the award alongside the IMU's other honours, including the Fields Medals, which are likewise announced at the ICM.
The broader context here is worth noting. The Leelavati Prize exists specifically to reward mathematical outreach, a domain that has historically struggled for recognition within mathematics faculties. Fry's appointment to a named chair at Cambridge and her receipt of the IMU's flagship public-communication prize within an 18-month span suggest that the field's attitude toward public engagement is shifting from toleration to active investment.
The citation's language is unusually expansive for an IMU document. Calling a recipient's reach "far beyond the public audience normally interested in science communication" is a tacit acknowledgment that mathematics faces a steeper communication challenge than the experimental sciences. A physics demonstration or a biology visualization can lean on phenomena a general audience can see or touch. Mathematics, by its nature, requires mediators who can translate abstraction into something a non-specialist not only tolerates but actively enjoys. The citation's emphasis on "fun" is doing real work in that framing.
For technology professionals, the prize sits at a relevant intersection. The applied mathematics that underpins modern computing, cryptography, machine learning, and data science is, in its working form, inaccessible to most of the population that depends on it. Communicators who can make that material legible to non-specialists serve a function that is increasingly hard to dismiss as mere popularization. The IMU's decision to recognise that work at its most prestigious venue signals that the mathematical community considers public literacy in the discipline to be a research-adjacent priority.

In this author's view, the pairing of a newly created Cambridge chair with the Leelavati Prize tells a consistent story: the institutions that produce mathematical knowledge are beginning to treat its transmission to the public as part of their core mission, not a charitable sideline. Whether that commitment outlasts the current news cycle is, as always, the open question. But the structural signals, a named professorship and a quadrennial international prize converging on the same individual, are more durable than a single announcement.
